Hello everyone and welcome to week 3!

It's amazing that most us met only two weeks ago! We are grateful to see 172 participants sharing information, making connections and
building friendships in an online environment! The bonds we create here are the greatest reward of EVO sessions!

Today many EVO participants got together in a skypecast at http://www.worldbridges.net/ to talk about their sessions and the activities planned for week 3. It was great to see so many B4Bers there!

Well, now it's time you take a deep breath and join us for one more week of blogging adventures!

The main objectives for week 2 are to post an entry to your blog and enhance it with images and hyperlinks; to start promoting your blog and building a community of readers. In order to reach these goals, we invite you to work on the following tasks:

It's basically the same procedure for uploading photos and videos, and they tell you which formats are possible to upload (mp3 is probably the most common, anyway). Hi Carla,
I'm pretty sure uploading music to a blog infringes copyright laws (unless the singer/band in question allows you to do it), that's why I did it as an experiment, just trying the different tools available on Multiply (guess I'm having another FOMS attack!). I don't know if there is a solution to that 'problem', but what I usually do is to provide a link to the audio/video file where the students would be able to listen to the song/see the clip.
To tell you the truth, I'm all for copyright, but I kind of like the way people subvert the rules every now and then... It forces the entertainment industry out (at least for some time) of their verycomfortable position... :)

Some of you have been going ahead at the speed of the light, learning ways to advance in your blogging with the help of the group, reading tutorials, by trial and error...And this is great! It means that you are independent learners and we're here only to guide you when things seem to be out of your reach. Some haven't had time to accomplish all the tasks. Don't worry! The good thing about online learning is that we establish certain parameters for each week, but you can work on your own pace.

The only advice we could give you is the following: try to focus on the week we're at, exploring in depth resources and options that you could be using for your blog. So, for example, one of the tasks of the week is on inserting images. OK, you're done with that, but maybe you could find different ways of doing it, looking for different options, always having in mind your students/audience and the goals you set for your blog. Could you go beyond as some are doing? Certainly!!! Just don't despair. Take a look at our Syllabus to see if what you want to know will be mentioned during this session.

For the ones who are still getting there, then you should focus on what is being asked. Don't be too hard on yourself. Take one step at a time and ask, ask, ask. Everybody learns with the group's questions. Questions make usreflect, research, rethink, and learn. Tutorials are always great helpers and we've been providing you with some and adding them as we feel it might be useful to the group.
So, we all know how overwhelming, but, at the same time, rewarding this experience can be. Just let it flow...Take it easy, test, make mistakes,shout! We'll be here listening to you.

PS: If your audience is your student, always remember to see how you could go about some problems you're facing as a student. Try to predict the glitches you may encounter while blogging in the classroom and prevent them.

Dear Gladys,
I've just opened a blog there to see what enhancements they've been working on lately, and I can tell you it has improved a lot! I have an edublogs account and am testing wordpress, which has the same interface.

Now, you have a number of widget options that you can include straight away to the sidebar. I haven't had time to explore it fully, but am eager to do it soon!

I'm very used to Blogger. However, in terms of controls and safety, I feel that Wordpress, Edublogs... is a great place to be with students. And I really like the "dynamic pages" there. You can create separate pages apart from the main page that stay on the sidebar.

Take a look at a joint international project I had with Carla Raguseo. On the Dynamic Pages, we could organize different topics (teens' life, world cup) in a way that it didn't get lost as we had other posts....

Picasa is a free image editing tool and it is cool to play around. Very user-friendly and whenever I have to edit or resize many photos at once, I use it! So, play around, have fun and email me if you have doubts. Bear in
mind that this is just one possibility for image edition. There are tons of them. However, as a teacher, and a busy one, I feel that this tool is really handy.

Dear An,
Removing a page element that doesn't work is easy. Go to the dashboard and
select "Layout". Then click on "Edit" in the box you have added the incorrect code. If you've done it as Karim advised, it should have the title "Frappr" on top. A new window will pop up. Click on "Remove page element" and that should play the trick!
There are two problems with your code, I think. First, it seems to be
incomplete. Make sure you right click on the code and select it all, before
copying it. This is the code I copied:

Secondly, the map is too big for the available space at the sidebar. Maybe the footbar is a better place. You could try the footer again or change the default size values. If you have a close look at the code you'll find this string:

You can alter those figures to reduce the map size. Another alternative is just place a link to the map in your sidebar. Let us know if you succeed!

I would like to help you if you are using the new Blogger. First,sign in with
your user name an pass word. While you are in the dashboard, click on Layout.
Under Template, you are in Page elements. Here, you can add and arrange you page elements. It is here where you have pasted the supposed code for the Frappr map on the side bar bar and the bottom side bar. Click on Edit of the element that you want to delete. A new window opens. There are 3 buttons at the at the bottom of the window. Click on "Remove page elements". A prompt asks you if you are sure to remove this element, click yes. There you go.
Make sure that when you want to paste a code, the whole code must be written
between these two symbols < >

About widgets: even though we're not quite there yet, I wanted to boast a little (forgive me): my son made the Wikipedia widget for Google last year! He was 15
then, and now his widget is among the top downloads! (Too bad his mom is not as talented...) To access it: www.google.com/ig/directory?

There is on widget that is available in all the templates.
I added Meebo to my sidebar. Here are the instructions on how to do the same inyour blog.

1.. Go to www.meebome.com. You need to create your own Meebo widget. This is
done in 3 simple steps. Just follow the directions.
2.. Copy the code
3.. In your blog go to Presentation click Sidebar Widgets.
4.. Scroll down to where it says Available Widgets at the bottom of the page.
5.. There is a widget called Meebo.Drag it to your sidebar in the same page.
6.. Click the little icon on the right of Meebo widget.
7.. Enter your code.
8.. Close the window and don´t forget to save it!!

Not sure about this, because I've barely started experimenting with
sound files.
The only solution that I can suggest may be to upload your WAV file to
a service like Odeo (http://odeo.com/), generate a feed from within
Odeo, and then copy/paste that feed into your blog (in Blogger:
Dashboard: Manage: Layout: Add a Page Element).
Have you listed your blog in the B4B Links: Participants' Blogs folder?

Thanks so much for your tips I will try odeo. I actually peeped into a couple of
blogs with sound files and realized in Karim's the sound file was hosted in some
www.fileden.com so I just visited the page, found I could upload up to 500MB (I
think), tried and worked!!! It was a great thing to accomplish because I am
teaching students with much more oral input than written one and only ready for
structured speaking.... I just added the ling. I did not know I should have done
that...;-)

Hi Monica, if you can't satisfactorily edit the HTML code for the width (change the number to 210, for instance)you could try one of the the Merriam-Webster dictionary widgets. There are lots of different sizes.

Dear Paul,
thank you so much for the explanations on how to resize the Free Dictionary widget, I was ready to have a go at editing the html code but now the problem is that I can't access my navigation bar editing page in Wikispaces! Isn't that weird? When I click on "navigation", I get a blank page, and all I can see is "done" at the bottom of my screen... :( At first I thought it was just loading slowly, but now I'm sure something's wrong. I'm going to write them today, I hope they'll help me find the solution.

Hi Barbi,
Access http://www.blogger.com
At the bottom of Blogger's main page there is an option "Idioma" Click there and then click on English.
Save your changes.
You can always go back to Spanish if you wish, but the easiest way to follow all tutorials is to have them in English.
In week 5, we will deal with customizing your template, adding widgets,etc, so it will be easier for you to follow all instructions if you see all the page in English.

of the things I lie is the possibility of categorizing your posts.

Last semester when my class of intermediate ESL students were co-blogging (I
don't know what else to call it) with a similar class in New Zealand, all
the students often replied to comments by adding a comment of their own.
However, I pointed out to my students that unless the commenters revisited
their blogs looking specifically for comments to old posts, they would never
receive the responses. Since everyone was using Blogger, I encouraged my
students to click on the name of the person who posted a comment. That
takes you automatically to that person's profile in Blogger, and at the
bottom of the profile, that person's public blogs (with students, there is
usually only one) are listed. You can click on the blog and visit it,
leaving a response on a post where the writer will be more likely to see
it. For example, you could write, "Dear So-and-so, thank you for leaving a
comment on my blog. I agree that.... You asked if.... I really like your
blog. In this post, you say..." etc.
I don't know if this would work in other bloghosts, and if students are not
using the same host, of course it would not work.

I am not such an expert as the team moderators but I feel that questions posted to blogs should be answered in the blog, too because it is a way of going back to it. If not, you may run the risk of abandoning your blog.
I'd love to read different views about this.

I'm not an experienced blogger myself, but I find Nina's as well as Silvana's suggestions as a very interesting combination of options.
Maybe, as many other things in interaction, there is no one answer for this.

This is a great question. I don't know the correct answer, but from what I have seen in the blogging world, a lot of bloggers respond to the comments within their own blog by writing the person's pseudonym and responding to what he/she had to say. Some of the blogs I read regularly do this, which is actually why I continue to read them. I think that it shows the readers that you read each comment and care about their viewpoints, and thus builds (and retains) your readership. Whether or not the readers come back to see if you've responded is a different question, although in some blogs I've seen, they do, and continue commenting, thus creating a sort of sub-dialog within the blog. (On a side note, I read somewhere that you can keep track of your own comments on blogs by posting them to delicious and tagging them in some way, such as "comments", and then you can go back and see if the author has responded. I really liked this idea and gave it a try, and it is great advice.)

Another form of etiquette I have seen is visiting the blogs of those who comment on, or even just read, your blog (I think there are site meters that can show you who is looking at your blog, although I don't quite understand that, yet), although, as it has been noted by Nina, this is only possible if the person is using the same blog host.

This, in my opinion, is a fascinating topic, and the key to building readership of your blog. I can't wait to see what others have to say!

Hi Kari! I think the issue you've brought up here crucial in the teaching of blogging.

David Parry writes:
"In order to be successful authors in this space, students need to construct content that takes advantage of the iterability and citationality that the web offers."

Blogging is more about building constructive dialogues than about "speaking up just to see if somebody hears", and our students need to be supported so that they come to see this.

Quite interesting views and suggestions given so far. I am no expert in blogging either but I feel a need to get in touch with the person who visited my blog and posted a comment. I always do what Nina mentioned, click on the name, visit his/her blog and make a comment and thank the person for visiting. Sometimes I feel like e-mailing the person directly but very frequently their address is not public.

Probably, if the blog is very specific on a topic or activity and it is important the conversation flows among participants, a natural sort of forum is created and authors then answer their commentators in the same blog. To be honest, I seldom go back to posts I have visited to check if the author has replied to my comment or not. Sometimes I am just thankful for an idea, a tool, a reflection and simply leave a comment acknowledging the author how I feel or establishing a possible
contact with a colleague who has common interests or concerns.

Well, just my thoughts on the topic.

Yesterday I read Zoho is just launching a wiki too (still in beta) and decided to give it a try: On the front page, you can see how I learned about this (BTW; Zoho's growing faster than I can reads the news!)

So far I can tell you:
* the editor is great, with four options, from Advanced (all kinds of icons) to HTML.
* you can make a wiki public or private, but not different pages,apparently.
* you can customize the custom top panel ,the skins and where your sidebar goes (loved so many options!)
* a wiki can be read and/or contributed to by : anyone / group members/ just its owner (you set read and contribute independenly)
* you can subscribe to updates via email for each page independently
* all documents on Zoho office suite can be embedded automatically.

BUT:
* I saw no way to revert to previous versions
* I found no way to keep track of who's done what or when (perhaps
because I'm still alone there?). There's "recent changes", but that
seems to show only links to last pages updated, not showing changes
that have taken place.

I set my Zoho wiki as ff:
who can read this wiki? anyone
who can contribute to this wiki? group

Now I need volunteers to test it and tell me how user-friendly you
find it, and to find out if anyone can commment with those settings.
Also, I need some kind souls who email me to gladysbaya@...
and tell me they want to be invited as members, to see how that works...

My previous experience with Zoho show (uploading a .ppt) was not that
successful, but was quite satisfactory for creating a slide show
collaboratively online...
I love collaboration tools! (does the phrase exist, or am I coining it?)

I have just checked your wiki in Zoho. And I had tried the demo they have. In the demo I saw a History link on the right-hand corner, and on the side bar, I saw some names I interpreted as the contributors or visitors. What I couldn't find in yours was how to post a
comments. That's why I am writing all this here. I find all the other features very friendly.

Dear Elizabeth, Blogs certainly have a personal element, but you don't necessarily need to talk about yourself...How about using some anecdotes for people you know (changing names, of course!) or inventing stories to use on your blog? It could be a real adventure and you wouldn't expose yourself...You just need to find ways to relate to your audience that will lead them to reply to you
in a meaningful way.
I'd love to see the result of a blog like this, full of stories of different people!
As for being around, don't worry. Do what you can!

Hi Monica,
I recommend the Englishpage - it's enormous and there are many levels,
also advanced. I've got it as a hyperlink in my list of English
teaching resources on my blog.
I especially like the fact that there are numerous online exercises for
every single grammar point. There are also drawings that help explain
verb tenses. These are helpful for us as teachers, too!

Hi Marcela
The first time you access Alado from a computer, it will ask you to
download a plug-in. Did you go to through this step? I guess so since
you said you were in the room! I don't know what happend in your case,
but closing the page and logging in again usually helps for me. If the
internet connection fails, you usually need to start from the
beginning, except that you wouldn't need to download the pulg-in again!
Use skype or IM to contact any moderator during a live session if you
face any problems again, ok?

Help! There's no option to change the font size for a post title in the template "fonts and colors" page. I'm using a template, so I can't seem to get into the HTML code to change the font size manually. It's not a big deal, but if anyone knows how I can make the post title smaller, I'd be grateful for your help!

Hi Jenny, I am no expert but try to go to "template" in the dashboard to see if you find that part of the code where the font is set. Some templates have detailed codes and others just references without the specific details. Do you want them larger or smaller? I noticed some of your posts have no title and I suppose you just don´t want any.

Another way to go is openning a new blog, writing a sample post and then playing with the different templates Blogger offers to see what they look like. That way you are not messing around what you already have in your present blog and can keep experimenting later without
the risk of losing material you want to keep.

Try to see if you can find this in the template and check if the
size changes by changing the percentage:

Once I wanted to have the main column as wide as I could and changed the width of the main posts in the template until I came up -by trial and error- with one that was really wide and almost took up all main space.

Who has figured out how to do this (using a Blogger template)? We want
readers to use our hyperlinks, but we don't want necessarily want them

So if you want to have any link opening in a new window, you should do the following:
Instead of just writing the url for the link, include the following html tag:

"B4B blog" is the how the link will appear on your blog (the text that will be visible to all readers). And then, if you click on it,it will take you to http://blogs4beginners.blogspot.com So just copy and paste this html tag into your blogs and change it to include the urls you want to.

Forgive me...I've got yet another question (and it's not the last one, either)! Some of you have your pictures next to the comments you leave on our blogs. How do you do this??? I've added my photo to gmail settings, but it still doesn't appear when I post a comment.

I think that once you insert your picture into your profile at Blogger, not gmail, then your photo will appear next to your comments on other blogs. The Blogger Help http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=42093&topic=8928 shows how to do that. Let us know if it works!

From your dashboard, select your blog and go to Settings/Comments. Scroll
down to "Show profile images on comments?" and select "Yes."

Hi Nina,
Thanks, but Yes (under 'show profile image on comments") was already
selected. Now I'm wondering if this setting (under Edit Profile) is
the culprit: "Share my profile Your profile will not be shown if it
is not shared." (and I checked 'no', thinking I was safeguarding my
privacy)
Getting in over my head here!
