Thanks, Carla Arena #1249 Go to the Dashboard of your blogger Click on "Profile" Find Photograph (photo URL) Copy this http://bloggingforbeginners.pbwiki.com/f/Barbi.jpg and paste there Scroll Down and Save Changes That's it! You'll have your Profile Photo.   Carla Raguseo # 1269 An, I had the same problem last night and spent over an hour on it. The only thing that worked for me ,since I don't want to download Picasa right now (I use Photoshop to resize my photos), was something that is suggested in Blogger itself. Although it sounds rather weird, they suggest posting a photo to an entry and then copying and pasting thelink in the profile template. Steps: Post the photo as a new entry. Click on see blog and then click on the photo again so that you can see it in full size on a separate blank page. Just copy the link to that blank page with the photo and paste it into to profile template. Then delete the photo!?!? I really think the Blogger team should make this step easier by allowing us to upload photos just as we do on the entries. Andrea Giordano #1276 Thank you for your mail but it failed too. It says link is broken. Galdys Baya #1284 You can delete the post at any moment after saving your profile, the picture is already in cyberspace anyway! Gladys Baya #1285 Make sure you copy everyting, from "http" to ".jpg", and delete the enter signs (>). It's too long, so it's bound to get broken... If it's enclosed within brackets like this <>, don't copy them (people use these in messages to help others see where the link starts and finishes). It's long, so it's bound to get broken... And, above all, don't give up! If it's getting too frustrating, tryworking on something else, and try once again in a few days.. You'll succeed! Andrea Giordano #1299 I FINALLY SUCCEEDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was able to add the links. Im still trying to add my pic on the profile but this was my prize of today. Thanks to everybody! Nina Liakos #1296 I had a lot of trouble getting my picture into my Blogger profile last year. Carla R's advice ( Post the photo as a new entry. Click on see blog and then click on the photo again so that you can see it in full size on a separate blank page. Just copy the link to that blank page with the photo and paste it into to profile template.Then delete the photo!?!?) should work, but I do it a little bit differently: 1. I post the photo in a new entry. (Since this will eventually go into the archive I don't delete it. For my students, it goes in their first entry with their self-intro. 2. To get the url for the picture, I just click on the "Edit html" tab in Create Post. But there may be some extraneous html that has to be deleted. 3. Add the url to the profile. Erika Cruvinel #1321 Hi girls I agree that it would be easier if we could upload pictures to our profile just as we do in our posts, but it is not avilable yet! The only way is still to copy the url of an picture that is already online! Linda Neas I have update my blog (http://www.contemplativeed.blogspot.com) with some new additions. I managed to down load a picture to a post...still not sure how I did it! I also created a URL for a picture to put in my profile, but when I save it, it disappears (it's not there when I go back to my profile. Not sure what that is all about. I may try another photo tomorrow to see if it will work better. It's not too big, so that's not the issue. Gladys Baya These might be two reasons why you fail to see your picture in your profile: 1. You have created the entry with your photo, but haven't added the image URL to your profile and saved the changes yet. 2. you haven't refreshed the page (by clicking on the icon in your browser bar), and so are seeing an old version of your profile... In other words, you've succeeded, but don't know it yet! ;-) Remember you can look for any of the moderators on Yahoo MSN or Skype for synchronous help. My user name is gladysbaya in both. I'm usually hidden, but you try to reach me, and if I can chat, I'll reply! Nina Liakos It might also help to clear your browser cache. Go to Tools, Options, Privacy, Cache, Clear cache now. This was a tip I got straight from Blogger Help.

Hello everyone and welcome to week 3!

It's amazing that most us met only two weeks ago! We are grateful to see 172 participants sharing information, making connections and
building friendships in an online environment! The bonds we create here are the greatest reward of EVO sessions!

Today many EVO participants got together in a skypecast at http://www.worldbridges.net/ to talk about their sessions and the activities planned for week 3. It was great to see so many B4Bers there!

Well, now it's time you take a deep breath and join us for one more week of blogging adventures!

The main objectives for week 2 are to post an entry to your blog and enhance it with images and hyperlinks; to start promoting your blog and building a community of readers. In order to reach these goals, we invite you to work on the following tasks:

1. Edit your Blogger profile.
2. Play around with with blog post. Add images and hyperlinks.
3. Comment on other Participants' blogs.
4. Discuss issues related to Blog Safety.
5. Learn about RSS and subscribe to Feedblitz.
6. Attend a live session with Phil Hollows, founder of Feedblitz.

Please access for more detailed instructions, tutorials, links and live sessions.

If you have any problems to edit your profile and add images and links to your blog, ask for help in our Yahoo! email group.
The discussions on Blog Safety and advantages of RSS should be posted to our group blog http://blogs4beginners.blogspot.com/

We really hope to see many of you in the live session next Thursday!

Let's Blog!

Uploading music to a blog / Copyright

Mônica
Veado

# 1153

Hi Nina,you asked before how we can upload music in Multiply, I tried it and it was really simple. It's basically the same procedure for uploading photos and videos, and they tell you which formats are possible to upload (mp3 is probably the most common, anyway). I uploaded an audio and a video file to one of my blogs, as an exercise... :) If you want to have a look, check http://impressoesdigitais.multiply.com

Carla Arena

#1156
Mônica,
My question is: can you include music on the blog without infringing copyright issues?
This week we'll be addressing this issue, which is a very important one when blogging, although we tend not to pay much attention to it...(In my case, I didn't, but after I took many online courses with different tutors around the world, I realized how important it is...)
Hoping to hear from you.

Mônica
Veado

#1183

Hi Carla,
I'm pretty sure uploading music to a blog infringes copyright laws (unless the singer/band in question allows you to do it), that's why I did it as an experiment, just trying the different tools available on Multiply (guess I'm having another FOMS attack!). I don't know if there is a solution to that 'problem', but what I usually do is to provide a link to the audio/video file where the students would be able to listen to the song/see the clip.
To tell you the truth, I'm all for copyright, but I kind of like the way people subvert the rules every now and then... It forces the entertainment industry out (at least for some time) of their verycomfortable position... :)

The Process of Trials and Errors - Some Advice

Carla Arena

#1158

Dear very active Bloggers,
Just a little typo on the message we sent you about Week 3 "The main objectives for week 2 are to post an entry to your blog and enhance it with images and hyperlinks.." . Please, read " The main objectives for week 3 are to post an entry to your blog and enhance it with images and hyperlinks..."

Some of you have been going ahead at the speed of the light, learning ways to advance in your blogging with the help of the group, reading tutorials, by trial and error...And this is great! It means that you are independent learners and we're here only to guide you when things seem to be out of your reach. Some haven't had time to accomplish all the tasks. Don't worry! The good thing about online learning is that we establish certain parameters for each week, but you can work on your own pace.

The only advice we could give you is the following: try to focus on the week we're at, exploring in depth resources and options that you could be using for your blog. So, for example, one of the tasks of the week is on inserting images. OK, you're done with that, but maybe you could find different ways of doing it, looking for different options, always having in mind your students/audience and the goals you set for your blog. Could you go beyond as some are doing? Certainly!!! Just don't despair. Take a look at our Syllabus to see if what you want to know will be mentioned during this session.

For the ones who are still getting there, then you should focus on what is being asked. Don't be too hard on yourself. Take one step at a time and ask, ask, ask. Everybody learns with the group's questions. Questions make usreflect, research, rethink, and learn. Tutorials are always great helpers and we've been providing you with some and adding them as we feel it might be useful to the group.
So, we all know how overwhelming, but, at the same time, rewarding this experience can be. Just let it flow...Take it easy, test, make mistakes,shout! We'll be here listening to you.

Warmly.

The Blogging Team

PS: If your audience is your student, always remember to see how you could go about some problems you're facing as a student. Try to predict the glitches you may encounter while blogging in the classroom and prevent them.

Wordpress, Blogger...

Carla Arena

Dear Gladys,
I've just opened a blog there to see what enhancements they've been working on lately, and I can tell you it has improved a lot! I have an edublogs account and am testing wordpress, which has the same interface.

Now, you have a number of widget options that you can include straight away to the sidebar. I haven't had time to explore it fully, but am eager to do it soon!

I'm very used to Blogger. However, in terms of controls and safety, I feel that Wordpress, Edublogs... is a great place to be with students. And I really like the "dynamic pages" there. You can create separate pages apart from the main page that stay on the sidebar.

Take a look at a joint international project I had with Carla Raguseo. On the Dynamic Pages, we could organize different topics (teens' life, world cup) in a way that it didn't get lost as we had other posts....
http://brazilargentina1.edublogs.org  And, of course, I love the fact of keeping track of messages in a certain post. With the new Blogger, I guess this is also possible. I'll check it!

Hi dear friends,
I was going nuts over how to post a video to wordpress and a

How to upload pictures at Blogger

Andrea Giordano

#1161

Please. I've just created my blog and i'm lost!!!! How can I load pics there? I download Hello and Picasa but my brain is collapsed.

Gladys Baya

#1180

Here's a direct link to a tutorial on how to post pictures at your blog, Andrea ( I understand you've chosen Blogger as your blog host): http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=41641&topic=8915(part of the reading Carla and Erika have set for week 3)

They say"the image icon in the post editor's toolbar lets you upload images to your blog(s)".

You don't need Picasa or Hello, I think.. they were necessary in the past, just before I started my first blog (mid 2004), if I'm not wrong...

Carla Arena

#1224

Picasa is a free image editing tool and it is cool to play around. Very user-friendly and whenever I have to edit or resize many photos at once, I use it! So, play around, have fun and email me if you have doubts. Bear in
mind that this is just one possibility for image edition. There are tons of them. However, as a teacher, and a busy one, I feel that this tool is really handy.

Adding Frappr Map to Blogger

Andrea Giordano

#1207

Hi, everybody,
I tried to add the Frappr map to my blog and I made a mistake: instead of adding it, I added the code they gave me to install it. It's at the bottom of the blog. How can I repair this?

Maria Claudia Bellusci

#1231

Dear An,
Removing a page element that doesn't work is easy. Go to the dashboard and
select "Layout". Then click on "Edit" in the box you have added the incorrect code. If you've done it as Karim advised, it should have the title "Frappr" on top. A new window will pop up. Click on "Remove page element" and that should play the trick!
There are two problems with your code, I think. First, it seems to be
incomplete. Make sure you right click on the code and select it all, before
copying it. This is the code I copied:
<div><embed quality="high" align="middle"
flashvars="host=http://www.frappr.com/&origin=unknown&lo=1&mvid=4307976"
type="application/x-shockwave-flash" height="400"
src="http://www.frappr.com/ajax/yvmap.swf" salign="l" width="600"
wmode="transparent" scale="noscale"></embed><div><a
href="/http://visitor.frappr.com/?sig=visitor_map&src_mvid=4307976&origin=unknown"
target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://frappr.com/i/gyo.gif"/></a><a
href="/http://www.frappr.com/?a=constellation_map&mapid=2876794&src=flash_map&sig
=visitor_map&src_mvid=4307976&origin=unknown&ct=seemore
"
target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://frappr.com/i/s.gif"/></a><a
href="/http://www.frappr.com/?a=constellation_map&mapid=2876794&src=flash_map&sig
=visitor_map&src_mvid=4307976&origin=unknown&ct=pendingpins
"
target="_blank"><img border="0"
src="http://frappr.com/dyn_map/2876794/origin:unknown/p.gif"/></a><a
href="http://www.frappr.com/?a=feedback&type=vm" target="_blank"><img
border="0" src="http://frappr.com/i/h.gif"/></a></div></div>

Secondly, the map is too big for the available space at the sidebar. Maybe the footbar is a better place. You could try the footer again or change the default size values. If you have a close look at the code you'll find this string:
height="400" src="http://www.frappr.com/ajax/yvmap.swf" salign="l"
width="600"
You can alter those figures to reduce the map size. Another alternative is just place a link to the map in your sidebar. Let us know if you succeed!

Karim Ben Yahya

#1233

I would like to help you if you are using the new Blogger. First,sign in with
your user name an pass word. While you are in the dashboard, click on Layout.
Under Template, you are in Page elements. Here, you can add and arrange you page elements. It is here where you have pasted the supposed code for the Frappr map on the side bar bar and the bottom side bar. Click on Edit of the element that you want to delete. A new window opens. There are 3 buttons at the at the bottom of the window. Click on "Remove page elements". A prompt asks you if you are sure to remove this element, click yes. There you go.
Make sure that when you want to paste a code, the whole code must be written
between these two symbols < >

 Widgets

Jenny in Delft

#1237

About widgets: even though we're not quite there yet, I wanted to boast a little (forgive me): my son made the Wikipedia widget for Google last year! He was 15
then, and now his widget is among the top downloads! (Too bad his mom is not as talented...) To access it: www.google.com/ig/directory?
synd=open&source=gghp .

He will be so thrilled if the B4B group uses it!

Jennifer Verschoor

#1241

How can you manage to add these widgets to Wordpress. I know that some widgets are not allowed.

Gladys Baya

I've been playing around a little at Wordpress, Jenn (from Argentina), to see how far you can go into template customization with them at present.

You need to click on "Presentation" to see that... Apparently, it all depends on the template you've chosen... With my current template, for instance (Fast Track), no widgets are allowed, but comments can be left on webpages as well as on posts (which was not the case with the Default theme). I also tried the theme "Connections reloaded", no comments allowed on web pages again, but you can choose from a number of widgets to display (by dragging and dropping, as in the new Blogger). But they were not widgets I'm keen on, so I went back to "Fast Track"...

Looks like the only way to find out is to explore the themes one by one... I was glad to learn I can add images that link to other URLS under links, though... (so far, I'd added only text).http://gladysbaya.edublogs.org

Jennifer Verschoor

#1301

Thanks Gladys for your clear explanation!!!
There is on widget that is available in all the templates.
I added Meebo to my sidebar. Here are the instructions on how to do the same inyour blog.

1.. Go to www.meebome.com. You need to create your own Meebo widget. This is
done in 3 simple steps. Just follow the directions.
2.. Copy the code
3.. In your blog go to Presentation click Sidebar Widgets.
4.. Scroll down to where it says Available Widgets at the bottom of the page.
5.. There is a widget called Meebo.Drag it to your sidebar in the same page.
6.. Click the little icon on the right of Meebo widget.
7.. Enter your code.
8.. Close the window and don´t forget to save it!!
My two cents to Wordpress.

Janet Tucker

#1271

Hi everyone,
What's a widget? It's not in the bloggers glossary. Did I miss something?

Gladys Baya

#1283
Hi Janet!
We (the moderation team)'d been discussing exact differences between this and other terms, and that's why it wasn't there yet!
Now, at Blogging Glossary you can read:

Widgets - fun, useful mini-applications that help you do everyday tasks. Widgets display information and invite the user to act in a number of ways. Widgets like clocks, chat widget, weather widget, etc, allow you to do something right there in the blog, without opening another application.

Thanks, Erika, for this (and many other wonderful contributions)!

Now, Janet, you needn't be concerned about widgets anyway. We'll be looking into them, under Claudia's lead, during week 5.

This week it's enough to "post an entry to your blog and enhance it (the entry, that is) with images and hyperlinks. To start promoting your blog and building a community of readers (by adding the link to our folder in this group)."

Check the syllabus if you don't believe me! ;-D!

Jenny in Delft

#1286

I was just about to post this one:
"A widget is a small, specialized application you can download and run on your desktop. Some of the most common widgets are clocks, battery monitors, calculators, calendars, news aggregators, and weather forecasts. More specialized widgets even let you track flights or monitor traffic on your route home.

Because they don't take up much space, look fun, and handle live data
well, widgets can be an alternative to a lot of open browsers or system
tools." (http://www.fidelitylabs.com/widgets/widget.shtml)

But is there a difference between a widget, a gadget and an add-on?

María Claudia Bellusci

#1447

We'll be using both the words "widget" and add-on" as synonyms in this workshop. As for "gadget" I've never seen it in this context (yet).
Thanks for your contribution

.

María Claudia Bellusci

#1451

I've just seen the word "gadget" as a synonym for widget on the Google
Gadgets page! (http://www.google.com/webmasters/gadgets/)

How to upload a wav file

Maite Martinez

#1119

I am trying to upload to my blog a home recorded file but I find nowhere to attach this kind of files. Anyone knows how to upload soundfiles?

Paul Beaufait

#1219

Not sure about this, because I've barely started experimenting with
sound files.
The only solution that I can suggest may be to upload your WAV file to
a service like Odeo (http://odeo.com/), generate a feed from within
Odeo, and then copy/paste that feed into your blog (in Blogger:
Dashboard: Manage: Layout: Add a Page Element).
Have you listed your blog in the B4B Links: Participants' Blogs folder?

Participants' blogs (B4B Yahoo! Group List)

Maite Martinez

#1228

Thanks so much for your tips I will try odeo. I actually peeped into a couple of
blogs with sound files and realized in Karim's the sound file was hosted in some
www.fileden.com so I just visited the page, found I could upload up to 500MB (I
think), tried and worked!!! It was a great thing to accomplish because I am
teaching students with much more oral input than written one and only ready for
structured speaking.... I just added the ling. I did not know I should have done
that...;-)

Help with Wikispaces + Dictionary Widgets

Mônica Veado

#1236

Can anybody help me??? The Free Dictionary (www.thefreedictionary.com) offers the possibility of adding a 'dictionary look up box' to your blog, wiki or website. I went to www.thefreedictionary.com/lookup.htm#sitecontent , costumized my options (simple view, small fonts, etc) and copied the html code
into my Wikispaces (http://manyreviews.wikispaces.com), using 'Edit navigation', and then 'add html content' or something like that (you can see the media icon on the tab). The problem is that I couldn't find a way of making the box smaller, in order to fit the navigation bar. Once you 'save' your work, you can see a little box saying 'custom', but although it looked like you could actually resize the box, the final result was always a box that is too large
for the navigation bar. (am I making sense???)

What am I doing wrong? The solution is probably very simple, but
I've already tried everything I could possibly think of...

Paul Beaufait

#1267

I can imagine two possible work-arounds that you might want to try - most difficult, first:

2. Actually edit the html (code) produced by FreeDict for the widget, after you save it, to make the widget smaller yourself.

Work-around two would require knowledge of html coding schemes that exceeds what little I've got, plus an html editing/testing
environment. Netscape Composer might work.

1. Find or make a smaller widget at FreeDict., before you save and
transfer it to wikispaces.

You already may have the smallest available. Or it may display
differently/properly in different web browsers.

If you address your problem to either FreeDict. or wikispaces help personnel (I've gotten quick responses from the latter), thefirst thing they'll probably want to know is what browser you're using.

0. A guick fix for a disfunctional widget in a wikispace sidebar mightn't satisfy you. However, I simply removed a widget that wasn't working, and made another, larger, more easily readable one to fit in (a) suitable page(s), rather than clutter up the sidebar.

Jenny in Delft

#1282

Hi Monica, if you can't satisfactorily edit the HTML code for the width (change the number to 210, for instance)you could try one of the the Merriam-Webster dictionary widgets. There are lots of different sizes.

http://www.m-w.com/searchbox/index.htm I've got one in the middle (not on the sidebar) because I wanted a thesaurus as well as a dictionary.

http://Jensblog-on-blogging.blogspot.com

Mônica Veado

#1289

Dear Paul,
thank you so much for the explanations on how to resize the Free Dictionary widget, I was ready to have a go at editing the html code but now the problem is that I can't access my navigation bar editing page in Wikispaces! Isn't that weird? When I click on "navigation", I get a blank page, and all I can see is "done" at the bottom of my screen... :( At first I thought it was just loading slowly, but now I'm sure something's wrong. I'm going to write them today, I hope they'll help me find the solution.

Nina (MD)

#1298

Thanks, Jenny! I just added a Merriam-Webster search box to my class blog:
http://005spr2007.blogspot.comIt was a piece of cake!

Thanks! I want this one for one of my class blogs... I'll try now...

How to upload pictures at Blogger profile

Bárbara Tous

#1247

Carla: I don't know how to upload an image in my blogger profile. I hope you can help me with that.
Thanks,

Carla Arena

#1249

Go to the Dashboard of your blogger
Click on "Profile"
Find Photograph (photo URL)
Copy this http://bloggingforbeginners.pbwiki.com/f/Barbi.jpg and paste there
Scroll Down and Save Changes
That's it! You'll have your Profile Photo.

Carla Raguseo

# 1269

An, I had the same problem last night and spent over an hour on it. The only thing that worked for me ,since I don't want to download Picasa right now (I use Photoshop to resize my photos), was something that is suggested in Blogger itself. Although it sounds rather weird, they suggest posting a photo to an entry and then copying and pasting thelink in the profile template.
Steps:
Post the photo as a new entry.
Click on see blog and then click on the photo again so that you can see
it in full size on a separate blank page.
Just copy the link to that blank page with the photo and paste it into
to profile template.
Then delete the photo!?!?
I really think the Blogger team should make this step easier by allowing
us to upload photos just as we do on the entries.

Andrea Giordano

#1276

Thank you for your mail but it failed too.
It says link is broken.

Galdys Baya

#1284

You can delete the post at any moment after saving your profile, the
picture is already in cyberspace anyway!

Gladys Baya

#1285

Make sure you copy everyting, from "http" to ".jpg", and delete the enter signs (>).

Andrea Giordano

#1299

I FINALLY SUCCEEDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was able to add the links. Im still trying to add my pic on the
profile but this was my prize of today.
Thanks to everybody!

Nina Liakos

#1296

I had a lot of trouble getting my picture into my Blogger profile last year.
Carla R's advice ( Post the photo as a new entry.
Click on see blog and then click on the photo again so that you can see it
in full size on a separate blank page. Just copy the link to that blank page
with the photo and paste it into to profile template.Then delete the
photo!?!?) should work, but I do it a little bit differently:

1. I post the photo in a new entry. (Since this will eventually go into the
archive I don't delete it. For my students, it goes in their first entry
with their self-intro.
2. To get the url for the picture, I just click on the "Edit html" tab in
Create Post. But there may be some extraneous html that has to be deleted.
3. Add the url to the profile.

Erika Cruvinel

#1321

Hi girls
I agree that it would be easier if we could upload pictures to our
profile just as we do in our posts, but it is not avilable yet! The
only way is still to copy the url of an picture that is already online!

Linda Neas

I have update my blog (http://www.contemplativeed.blogspot.com) with some new additions. I managed to down load a picture to a post...still not sure how I
did it!

I also created a URL for a picture to put in my profile, but when I save it, it
disappears (it's not there when I go back to my profile. Not sure what that is
all about. I may try another photo tomorrow to see if it will work better.
It's not too big, so that's not the issue.

Gladys Baya

These might be two reasons why you fail to see your picture in your
profile:
1. You have created the entry with your photo, but haven't added the
image URL to your profile and saved the changes yet.
2. you haven't refreshed the page (by clicking on the icon in your
browser bar), and so are seeing an old version of your profile... In
other words, you've succeeded, but don't know it yet! ;-)

Remember you can look for any of the moderators on Yahoo MSN or Skype
for synchronous help. My user name is gladysbaya in both. I'm usually
hidden, but you try to reach me, and if I can chat, I'll reply!

Nina Liakos

It might also help to clear your browser cache. Go to Tools, Options, Privacy, Cache, Clear cache now. This was a tip I got straight from Blogger Help.

How to add links to Blogger

Bárbara Tous

#1320

An: How did you add the links to your blog? I want to do that but I don't know how.

Andrea Giordano

# 1322

Dear Barbie,
It' easy( although I did it hundreds of times til I get the point):
Go to Blogger
Dashboard
Layout
Add a page element
Link list
Add to blog
Write a title
Write a name of URL site
Add link
Edit
Save changes
See if it's in the correct place.
Good luck!

Bárabara Tous

#1329

I tried to follow your instructions, but my problem is that I have them in Spanish and I don't know how to change them to English.

Erika Cruvinel

#1378

Hi Barbi,
Access http://www.blogger.com
At the bottom of Blogger's main page there is an option "Idioma" Click there and then click on English.
Save your changes.
You can always go back to Spanish if you wish, but the easiest way to follow all tutorials is to have them in English.
In week 5, we will deal with customizing your template, adding widgets,etc, so it will be easier for you to follow all instructions if you see all the page in English.

Bárabara Tous

#1330

Carla: I could finally add a link at the bottom of the page of my blog, following your instructions. Thank you very much. But now I want to add links to the entries I post, and I don't know how to do that. Hugs,

Nina Liakos

#1358

Barbara,
When you are in "Create Post", there is a link icon (like a chain link)
which you can click on to create a link within a post.
Cheers,

Ideas for Blogging

Carla Arena

#1248

Dear Ana Maria.
Just checked your blog. Great start!
Now, let me give you a little tip. You asked about your students' vacation, right? So, maybe you could mention on your post what You did during your vacation. It's a good way to establish rapport with them telling them a bit of your own personal experience. Well, just an idea that has worked for me!Hope it helps.

Mônica Veado

#1288

Once I used Real Travel ( http://realtravel.com ) with some students,
and they made blogs about their favourite holiday destinations. It was
a lot of fun and RealTravel seems to be a very large community. You
may want to have a look at what people there are talking about... The
idea of a blog with your paintings sounds great! I wish I had a
truly "bloggable" talent! :)

Google accounts for Blogger /GMail

Nina Liakos

#1204

I don't think you need an invitation to open a google account, which enables you to have a blogger blog or post to blogs restricted to registered users only. Invitations are needed only for gmail accounts (I can't for the life of me figure out why this is necessary!).

Anyway, if you go to settings/comments from your Blogger dashboard and select "Anyone" in response to "Who can comment?" this will solve the problem. Then enable comment moderation (same page) and show wordverification for comments (same page) to approve comments in email before they are posted and restrict commenters to human beings, respectively.

Gladys Baya

#1281

The reason why you need an invitation to try Gmail, Nina, is that the product is still in beta (don't ask me what else they need to check!)

At (dated June 3, 2006), you can read:
"We're still testing Gmail and making improvements, which is why it isn't available to everyone yet. We believe Gmail is an innovative search-based approach to email, and we do expect to make Gmail available to the general public in the future."

They've just started offering to send invitation codes to mobile phones (available only for a few countries): https://www.google.com/accounts/SmsMailSignup1

They say they do all this to cut down on spammers... I find it odd, but I have to admit spam filtering with Gmail is PERFECT, while I have some problems with Yahoo! and I only get spam with Tutopia!!!

PS: I have over 90 invitations remaining to share for gmail, if anyone is interested.

Notification of comments in Blogs

Gladys Baya

(#1096)

Wordpress (that includes Edublogs, Learnerblogs and others, if I'm not wrong) is the only blog host where I can request to be emailed when there are replies to my comments... I love that! Also, it converts emoticons into images ;-)

Before the new Blogger, it was the only one where I could create categories for posts... And it also allows me to create web pages integrated with my blog!

The dark side of Wordpress for me has always been I've been unable to customize my template (though I think there IS a way!). And there's no previous option for comments... :-(

Karen V.

#1220

Wordpress sounds great. I will have to check it out more.

As for e-mail notification of new comments, Blogger (New Blogger) allows that.

Click on "Customize" >>> Click on "Settings" >>> Click on "Comments" >>> Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for the "Comment Notification Address" section. Put in your e-mail address. It is a nice little feature.

Gladys Baya

#1287

If I'm getting you right, that'll will notify me when I get comments posted in my own blogs at Blogger.
The feature of Wordpress I like, though, enables me to request notifications of replies to my comments on other people's blogs.
Actually, it just lets you know when comments are entered after yours, but that's a beginning... It's the only way for me to know if a blogger has reacted to my comment postin a comment themselves!

Jose Antonio Da Silva

#1392

I totally agree with you about wordpress. I am a big fan of it. One
of the things I lie is the possibility of categorizing your posts.
Some other thing that Bee mentioned in her presentation is the
possibility of agregating all your wordpres blogs in one page.

Blogging Politeness

Maite Martinez

#1307

This is a simple question for the long time bloggers. Are we supposed to answer to our comments with comments in our blogs or emailing to the participants who leave a comment in our blog?

I see that Carla has left a really tempting question to answer in my blog and I have finally answered but it feels weird somehow to answer her in my blog because unless she visits again she won't find out. I share a short comment for Paul and Karim and Erika and... others however I do not know if I should send an eamil or it is part of blogging culture to go back to where we left a comment to see if it has some feedback....thanks to the blogging polites!

Paul Beaufait

#1315

Well, I've only been at it for a bit over six months, but I'd say it's
perfectly appropriate to respond as Maite did, in her blog.

For more hints about getting and staying in touch via blogs, see Message
#1287 .

Nina Liakos

#1338

Last semester when my class of intermediate ESL students were co-blogging (I
don't know what else to call it) with a similar class in New Zealand, all
the students often replied to comments by adding a comment of their own.
However, I pointed out to my students that unless the commenters revisited
their blogs looking specifically for comments to old posts, they would never
receive the responses. Since everyone was using Blogger, I encouraged my
students to click on the name of the person who posted a comment. That
takes you automatically to that person's profile in Blogger, and at the
bottom of the profile, that person's public blogs (with students, there is
usually only one) are listed. You can click on the blog and visit it,
leaving a response on a post where the writer will be more likely to see
it. For example, you could write, "Dear So-and-so, thank you for leaving a
comment on my blog. I agree that.... You asked if.... I really like your
blog. In this post, you say..." etc.
I don't know if this would work in other bloghosts, and if students are not
using the same host, of course it would not work.

Silvana Carnicero

#1348

I am not such an expert as the team moderators but I feel that questions posted to blogs should be answered in the blog, too because it is a way of going back to it. If not, you may run the risk of abandoning your blog.
I'd love to read different views about this.

Pat Maceda

#1349

I'm not an experienced blogger myself, but I find Nina's as well as Silvana's suggestions as a very interesting combination of options.
Maybe, as many other things in interaction, there is no one answer for this.
It's just my humble contribution

Kari

#1362

This is a great question. I don't know the correct answer, but from what I have seen in the blogging world, a lot of bloggers respond to the comments within their own blog by writing the person's pseudonym and responding to what he/she had to say. Some of the blogs I read regularly do this, which is actually why I continue to read them. I think that it shows the readers that you read each comment and care about their viewpoints, and thus builds (and retains) your readership. Whether or not the readers come back to see if you've responded is a different question, although in some blogs I've seen, they do, and continue commenting, thus creating a sort of sub-dialog within the blog. (On a side note, I read somewhere that you can keep track of your own comments on blogs by posting them to delicious and tagging them in some way, such as "comments", and then you can go back and see if the author has responded. I really liked this idea and gave it a try, and it is great advice.)

Another form of etiquette I have seen is visiting the blogs of those who comment on, or even just read, your blog (I think there are site meters that can show you who is looking at your blog, although I don't quite understand that, yet), although, as it has been noted by Nina, this is only possible if the person is using the same blog host.

This, in my opinion, is a fascinating topic, and the key to building readership of your blog. I can't wait to see what others have to say!

Gladys Baya

#1393

Hi Kari! I think the issue you've brought up here crucial in the teaching of blogging.

David Parry writes:
"In order to be successful authors in this space, students need to construct content that takes advantage of the iterability and citationality that the web offers."

Blogging is more about building constructive dialogues than about "speaking up just to see if somebody hears", and our students need to be supported so that they come to see this.

Berta

#1417

Quite interesting views and suggestions given so far. I am no expert in blogging either but I feel a need to get in touch with the person who visited my blog and posted a comment. I always do what Nina mentioned, click on the name, visit his/her blog and make a comment and thank the person for visiting. Sometimes I feel like e-mailing the person directly but very frequently their address is not public.

Probably, if the blog is very specific on a topic or activity and it is important the conversation flows among participants, a natural sort of forum is created and authors then answer their commentators in the same blog. To be honest, I seldom go back to posts I have visited to check if the author has replied to my comment or not. Sometimes I am just thankful for an idea, a tool, a reflection and simply leave a comment acknowledging the author how I feel or establishing a possible
contact with a colleague who has common interests or concerns.

Well, just my thoughts on the topic.

Zoho Wiki : a new tool

Gladys  Baya

Yesterday I read Zoho is just launching a wiki too (still in beta) and decided to give it a try: On the front page, you can see how I learned about this (BTW; Zoho's growing faster than I can reads the news!)

So far I can tell you:
* the editor is great, with four options, from Advanced (all kinds of icons) to HTML.
* you can make a wiki public or private, but not different pages,apparently.
* you can customize the custom top panel ,the skins and where your sidebar goes (loved so many options!)
* a wiki can be read and/or contributed to by : anyone / group members/ just its owner (you set read and contribute independenly)
* you can subscribe to updates via email for each page independently
* all documents on Zoho office suite can be embedded automatically.

BUT:
* I saw no way to revert to previous versions
* I found no way to keep track of who's done what or when (perhaps
because I'm still alone there?). There's "recent changes", but that
seems to show only links to last pages updated, not showing changes
that have taken place.

I set my Zoho wiki as ff:
who can read this wiki? anyone
who can contribute to this wiki? group

Now I need volunteers to test it and tell me how user-friendly you
find it, and to find out if anyone can commment with those settings.
Also, I need some kind souls who email me to gladysbaya@...
and tell me they want to be invited as members, to see how that works...

My previous experience with Zoho show (uploading a .ppt) was not that
successful, but was quite satisfactory for creating a slide show
collaboratively online...
I love collaboration tools! (does the phrase exist, or am I coining it?)

Nina Lyulkun

#1319

Dear Galdys,

In spite of my limited Internet access from now on, I took a look at your Zoho wiki.
It is fabulously well organized and full of invaluable information for the EVO participants.
I am non-stop opening my eyes on your creativity and hardworking. You are just a
person to take a pattern by.
Thank you very much for ever essential tutorials for everyone in the group.

Pat Maceda

(#1468)

Dear Gladys,
I have just checked your wiki in Zoho. And I had tried the demo they have. In the demo I saw a History link on the right-hand corner, and on the side bar, I saw some names I interpreted as the contributors or visitors. What I couldn't find in yours was how to post a
comments. That's why I am writing all this here. I find all the other features very friendly.

May I ask for a few steps if possible?

Erika Cruvinel

Hello Yordana
You can get a Google Account at
https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount
But you don't really need a Google Account to write comments in other
participants' blogs. There are three different ways to post a comment.
Take a look at this tutorial on how to post a comment in Blogger
http://bloggingforbeginners.pbwiki.com/Tutorials#HowtoPostaComment
Silvana Carnicero I entered Blogger as I used to do so and the system led me to create the
Google account automatically. It was easier than I expected.

About Blogs and Being Personal - Podomatic

Carla Arena

#1314

Dear Elizabeth, Blogs certainly have a personal element, but you don't necessarily need to talk about yourself...How about using some anecdotes for people you know (changing names, of course!) or inventing stories to use on your blog? It could be a real adventure and you wouldn't expose yourself...You just need to find ways to relate to your audience that will lead them to reply to you
in a meaningful way.
I'd love to see the result of a blog like this, full of stories of different people!
As for being around, don't worry. Do what you can!
Podomatic is a great place to experiment. I have one that I do different things with my students http://sambaefl.podomatic.comand as Valentine's is coming, I love Cris Costa's idea...I listened to each one of them! http://dreamteam.podomatic.com/ Hoping to hear from you soon.

Erika Cruvinel

Carla just mentioned Cristina's podcast in her email and I had to tell you that I was very proud to read an article in the magazine Essential Teacher this week written by Cristina Costa. She writes about her two podcasts http://dreamteam.podomatic.com and http://aprilfoolsday.podomatic.com Really worth reading!

Grammar Reference - Help

Mônica Veado

#1373

Hi everyone!
Does anyone know of a good grammar reference online? I'd like to post
a link to my students in my wiki, but all the pages I've found so far
are directed to elementary/pre-intermediate levels, and my students
are advanced...Thanks for your help!!!

Verónica Baig

#1376

Here's a plug for our English Grammar Handbook: it's part of our Write site. http://www.athabascau.ca/courses/engl/egh/ It's aimed at adult students at the advanced level. I hope you find it useful.

Carla Arena

#1379

Dear Monica,
Check this bookmarks Erika and I have had for years
http://www.ikeepbookmarks.com/browse.asp?account=24096&clientWidth=0 click on grammar pages and we have an e-folder for our school activities that you might also want
to check http://www.thomas.org.br/new_ctj/stuff/stuff_efolder.php?folder=27&menu=#3
Hope it helps.

Jenny in Delft

#1387

Hi Monica,
I recommend the Englishpage - it's enormous and there are many levels,
also advanced. I've got it as a hyperlink in my list of English
teaching resources on my blog.
I especially like the fact that there are numerous online exercises for
every single grammar point. There are also drawings that help explain
verb tenses. These are helpful for us as teachers, too!

Silvana Carnicero

I usually use Grammar Aquarium (write this name in your browser). It has many
exercises on each gramamr point from elementary to advanced level. It also
provides you with explanations on each point and a printable version of all the
exercises.

Team Blogging

Kari

#1363

My initial idea was to involve all of the teachers I work
with, but then I realized that the blog came under my other, personal
blog (which I use to keep family and friends updated) and decided I
didn't want others to be linked to that one. In fact, aside from
creating a new user name, I really don't understand how to create a
team or class blog. I am hoping that info. will come up soon (if it
hasn't already - I am a bit behind).

Hello everyone. I am finally getting around to sharing my
"professional" blog. I started this awhile back but stopped because I
didn't know how to continue it, so it would be nice to hear your
comments.

Carla Raguseo

#

As regards creating a team blog, once you start it, you have the option
of inviting other authors to join in: On the Dashboard go to Setting ,
Permissions and click on add Author. Type the email addresses of the
people you're inviting to the blog and click on Invite. Once they
receive it they have to accept the invitation.
About your concern of not letting other people access your personal
blog, the new version allows you to choose the blogs you want to display
in your profile.
Check out the Blogger help page for a more detailed explanation of this
and other issues: http://help.blogger.com/ Hope this helps.

Problems with Alado

Marcela Devoto

de Anello

#

Hi, friends worldwide
I was supposed to be at the live session but somehow ALADO did not work.
Everything went fine until I was inside the room, and then a message
appeared, saying: Imposible conectar (10061)
So, here I am, none the wiser as to what (100619) means.
If anyone out there knows, please, tell me what I did wrong, I think I
followed the tutorial properly, but there must have been a mistake.

1369

Erika Cruvinel

#1383

Hi Marcela
The first time you access Alado from a computer, it will ask you to
download a plug-in. Did you go to through this step? I guess so since
you said you were in the room! I don't know what happend in your case,
but closing the page and logging in again usually helps for me. If the
internet connection fails, you usually need to start from the
beginning, except that you wouldn't need to download the pulg-in again!
Use skype or IM to contact any moderator during a live session if you
face any problems again, ok?

Podcasts for language learning

Hi everyone,
here's a cool link! The site Open Culture offers free podcasts aimed at language learners around the globe. Changing "post title font size" in Blogger

Jenny in Delft

#1389

Help! There's no option to change the font size for a post title in the template "fonts and colors" page. I'm using a template, so I can't seem to get into the HTML code to change the font size manually. It's not a big deal, but if anyone knows how I can make the post title smaller, I'd be grateful for your help!

Berta

#1416

Hi Jenny, I am no expert but try to go to "template" in the dashboard to see if you find that part of the code where the font is set. Some templates have detailed codes and others just references without the specific details. Do you want them larger or smaller? I noticed some of your posts have no title and I suppose you just don´t want any.

Another way to go is openning a new blog, writing a sample post and then playing with the different templates Blogger offers to see what they look like. That way you are not messing around what you already have in your present blog and can keep experimenting later without
the risk of losing material you want to keep.

Try to see if you can find this in the template and check if the
size changes by changing the percentage:

}
.post-title {
margin:.25em 0 0;
padding:0 0 4px;
font-size:140%;
font-weight:normal;
line-height:1.4em;
color:#c60;
}

Once I wanted to have the main column as wide as I could and changed the width of the main posts in the template until I came up -by trial and error- with one that was really wide and almost took up all main space.

This is the one I use now:

@media all {
#content {
width:800px;
margin:0 auto;
padding:0;
text-align:left;
}
#main {
width:450px;
float:left;
}
#sidebar {
width:220px;
float:right;

Jenny in Delft

#1420

Berta, this is exactly the information I need, BUT I can't get to any
code at all under the Template (in the Dashboard)~! There are only
idiot buttons (which is how I feel...). How do I get to see some code?

#1422

Got it! It was hiding behind "edit HTML"

How to open hyperlinks in new window - Blogger

Jenny in Delft

#1391

Who has figured out how to do this (using a Blogger template)? We want
readers to use our hyperlinks, but we don't want necessarily want them
to navigate far away from our blogs... ;-))

Thanks, you brilliant bloggers,

Erika Cruvinel

#1407

Hi Jenny, sure we don't want our readers to navigate away from our blogs!
So if you want to have any link opening in a new window, you should do the following:
Instead of just writing the url for the link, include the following html tag:

Example:
<a href="http://blogs4beginners.blogspot.com/"
target="_blank">B4B blog!</a>

"B4B blog" is the how the link will appear on your blog (the text that will be visible to all readers). And then, if you click on it,it will take you to http://blogs4beginners.blogspot.com So just copy and paste this html tag into your blogs and change it to include the urls you want to.

This is a page where you can find other hints on how to use html
tags.
http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_links.asp Try it out and let us know if it worked!

Photos in comments - Blogger

Jenny in Delft

#1403

Forgive me...I've got yet another question (and it's not the last one, either)! Some of you have your pictures next to the comments you leave on our blogs. How do you do this??? I've added my photo to gmail settings, but it still doesn't appear when I post a comment.

Mary Hillis

#1410

I think that once you insert your picture into your profile at Blogger, not gmail, then your photo will appear next to your comments on other blogs. The Blogger Help http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=42093&topic=8928 shows how to do that. Let us know if it works!

Nina Liakos

#1415

From your dashboard, select your blog and go to Settings/Comments. Scroll
down to "Show profile images on comments?" and select "Yes."

Jenny in Delft

1425

Hi Nina,
Thanks, but Yes (under 'show profile image on comments") was already
selected. Now I'm wondering if this setting (under Edit Profile) is
the culprit: "Share my profile Your profile will not be shown if it
is not shared." (and I checked 'no', thinking I was safeguarding my
privacy)
Getting in over my head here!

Hi Barbi, if the video you want to upload to your blog is from

the video a box with an html code that says "Embed". You should copy
